Fun FactsIn a swift reply to President Buhari's option of banning the hijab if Boko Haram Suicide bombing's persist, an Islamic organisation, Muslims Right Concern (MURIC), has rejected the idea on the possibility of banning the hijab.
In a statement by the Director of the organisation, Ishaq Akintola, the group described banning hijab as an escapist and Scapegoatism move.
Full text of MURIC's statement reads:
President Muhammadu Buhari Yesterday evening hosted media executives to a presidential media chat. The president hinted on the possibility of imposing a ban on hijab in the near future if the bombings continue.
The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) rejects any idea of imposing a ban on hijab. It is escapist. It is scapegoatism. It will open the floodgates of anarchy. Instead of solving Nigeria's security problems, it is most likely to compound it.
If army and police uniforms are not banned although they are often used by bandits, why should we ban hijab? Security agents know how they often fish out hoodlums who use police and soldiers' uniforms to commit atrocities. The same method should be used to prevent the use of hijab for bombing.
What crime have Nigerian Muslim women committed that they should be derobed in public? Without their hijab, Muslim women feel as if they are naked. Users of hijab are in all walks of life. They are civil servants, business women, teachers, etc. Most importantly, they are tax payers and voters. They voted Buhari into power. Is Buhari's government warming up to encroach on Allah-given fundamental rights of Muslim women? Is this an appropriate pay-back?
Another dimension in the idea of banning hijab is the geographical area likely to be involved in the ban? Will it be limited to the three troubled states of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe? Will it extend to the whole North East or will the ban cover the whole of Nigeria?
The question also arises, Mr. President, if you ban hijab, what is the time frame? When will you deban it? Are we not likely to experience more religious upheavals after the ban as some religious zealots will want to capitalize on the ban by maltreating Muslim women? Will these religious fanatics who use the period of the ban to oppress Muslim women stop their repression even after hijab has been de-proscribed?
Has President Buhari pondered over the impact of the imposition of a state of emergency on those three states by the past administration? Did it stop insurgency? We posit that Boko Haram handlers will simply shift to other methods to conduct their nefarious activities. Already they have introduced suicide bombing by children. Is Buhari going to ban children from going out to the streets?
MURIC appreciates Mr. President's dilemma. We understand that Boko Haram must be defeated. But Muslim women must not be the scape goats.Nigerian Muslims will not succumb to a policy that dehumanizes their mothers, wives, daughters and sisters. Banning hijab tantamounts to institutionalizing the stereotyping of Muslim women. This is unacceptable.
Hijab is more than a covering for female Muslims. It is a unique identity for Muslim women. It is a mark of dignity and a symbol of piety. Hijab is an integral part of Islam, a microcosm in a macro. Whoever bans hijab has fired a shot at the religion of Islam. We, therefore, advise Mr. President to tread softly.
Hijab also represents chastity and innocence. By banning the hijab, Nigeria will be pronouncing its hypocrisy to the international community as a country which claims to be fighting HIV and AIDS yet it has failed to protect chastity and innocence. Whoever bans hijab has given unbridled licence to indecent dressing among women, its attendant sexual licentiousness and the exposure of society to its aftereffects.
Buhari and his security chiefs must, therefore, find other means of stopping the bombings. They should leave Muslim women alone. Nigeria's security agencies must sit up and device other means. There must be new initiatives and fresh ideas. Armchair crime-fighting is an anachronism. They must not use Muslim women as scapegoats. They must step up their intelligence gathering gimmicks.
On a final note, we opine that banning hijab will be a mark of victory for Boko Haram. The insurgents will celebrate their success in causing so much confusion and such wide division between the government and its Muslim citizenry.

Fun FactsAttorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN
The federal government won't compromise its fight against terrorism and financial crimes, the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN has said.
Malami said this in Abuja when BringBackOurGirls campaign movement visited him.
"I cannot imagine someone been responsible for monumental deaths of our citizens and then going scot-free arising from plea-bargain as a policy. It has never been the policy of the government to make compromises on terrorism and financial crimes. It will never be tolerated by the office of the AGF," he said.
He said the abduction of the school girls is "tormenting and psychologically traumatizing" for the nation.
"It is tragic for a nation to have a budget meant for arms procurement for the protection of lives and property of the citizens, and end up not having the arms but compromising the process of making adequate provisions for the protection of lives of its citizens," he said.
"The government of President Muhammadu Buhari has demonstrated sufficient skill and commitment to the protection of lives and property within the shortest practicable time of coming into existence, it has recorded tremendous success including confronting Sambisa forest head-on with the hope of rescuing the Chibok girls," the minister said.
Earlier, the group's co-convener and former minister of education, Oby Ezekwesili, told the minister that the inefficient governance of the immediate past government was largely responsible for the tragedy of the Chibok girls.
She recalled that since the advocacy for the Chibok girls began in April 2014, no concrete step was taken by the ex-President Goodluck Jonathan's administration to secure the safe return of the girls.
"In the movement, we over time realised that it is the failure of governance that resulted in the abduction of the Chibok girls and that corruption was the key obstacle to the rescue of the girls," she said.

Fun FactsSheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky
Members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria yesterday demanded the setting up of a judicial commission of inquiry to probe the killings of their members in Zaria on December 12 and 13, during its meeting with House of Representatives panel.
The movement also demanded for the unconditional release of their leader Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky and his wife who have been in the custody of security agencies since the incident.
Members of the movement made the demand when they appeared before a House of Representatives panel investigating the matter.
Although the meeting was held behind closed-door, a lawmaker at the meeting told Daily Trust last night that six members of the movement including some lawyers, chairman of their medical team, an associate professor from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria and the head of their education section were present.
It was also gathered that the movement members demanded for the corpses of their members for proper Islamic burial as well as the release of the injured for medical attention, alleging that hundreds of their members are currently detained in Kaduna prison without being charged to court.
The source said they told the committee that the killings were premeditated based on the way and manner they were carried out and sustained for more than 48 hours.
They said there was no reason for their leader and his wife would be held in custody for weeks without any information on his whereabouts without being charged to court.
It was wrong, they added, for anybody to refer to them as a sect, but that they are a movement comprising of adherents of Shia, Sunni, Tijjaniyya and even Christian priests.
The source added that they alleged that apart from killing scores and destroying their Hussainiyya centre, soldiers also went to where Zakzaky's mother was buried and tried to exhume her body and also destroyed their cemetery at Darur Rahma along Jos -Zaria road.
They further said that when the killings were going on, personnel of the Red Cross who attempted to render help to the injured and evacuate those killed were denied access by soldiers.
After listening to their submissions, the committee chairman Rep Aminu Sani Jaji (APC, Zamfara), said his committee would do a thorough investigation.
He said his committee would intervene for the release of Sheikh Zakzaky and other members of the movement in detention.
The lawmaker said the committee would also visit the movement Hussainiyya, Zakzaky's residence as well as the Darur Rahma, and other affected places to see for themselves.
He promised that he would ensure that justice is done no matter which of the two sides is found guilty.

Fun FactsPeoples Democratic Party's (PDP) national vice chairmen have dissociated themselves from some prominent members indicted in the $2.1 billion arms deal scandal perpetrated under the President Goodluck Jonathan administration.
The party chiefs also expressed support for President Muhammadu Buhari's anti-corruption war.
A number of PDP chieftains, including former Sokoto State Governor Attahiru Dalhatu Bafarawa and the immediate past National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, are on trial for their alleged roles in the scandal.
At a meeting in Abuja on Tuesday, the party vice chairmen agreed that the country's economic growth could be stunted, if corruption was not eradicated.
In a communique by PDP Vice Chairman, Southsouth, Dr. Cairo Ojougboh, the party chiefs dissociated the PDP from any corrupt practices while in power.
"The body notes with great concern the various allegations and charges against some PDP members that served in the previous government.
"Even as these allegations and charges are yet to be proved, we call on the President to also investigate some of his serving ministers and associates that even more grievous allegations have been levelled against," the communique said.
The party chiefs warned that disciplinary action would be taken against any of the party members convicted for corruption.
Stating PDP's position on the ideals of its founding fathers, they insisted on the adherence to the rule of law in the process leading to the trial of the suspects in the arms cash scandal.
They enjoined party members to remain resolute and wait for the party's pending repositioning, "where square pegs will be placed in square holes and justice and equity will prevail".
The communique reads: "Furthermore, we reaffirm that mediocres will no longer be allowed to govern the affairs of the party. Power will now be returned to the people at the grassroots.
"We make bold to say that those who are corrupt have left the party and those who left are indisputably mercenaries and soldiers of fortune.
"That in spite of having lost the presidential election, the PDP remains the largest party in Nigeria and Africa and we intend to keep it so.
"That the vast majority of PDP members at the grassroots are innocent and not corrupt and accordingly, we frown at and reject the notion and tagging of the PDP as a corrupt party.
"That Nigerians will realise soon that the PDP remains the only viable choice for the unity and progress of Nigeria.
"The body hereby commends our governors who are the leaders in the states and reiterate our call on them to remain resolute and steadfast."

Fun FactsKaduna-based Islamic scholar Sheikh Ahmad Abubakar
Gumi said ex-President Umaru Yar'adua told him of the
massive importation of arms and ammunition in parts of
the country, citing Iran as a supplier of arms to the
Shi'ites.
He further alleged that Sheikh El-Zakzaky ran a parallel
government in the North for 40 years.
Addressing reporters yesterday, Gumi said: "The Shi'ites
have been embarking on military training and producing
cadets and soldiers. They are operating a state within a
state."
According to him, "the Islamic Movement of Nigeria does
not recognise the corporate entity of the country. The
group is not registered. Members operate above the law
and get direct foreign aid."
The doctor-turned Islamic scholar said the clash between
Shi'ites and soldiers was "a divine intervention to prevent
us from a catastrophe as that of Boko Haram."
He said he wrote Zakzaky about a year ago, warning him
about the dangers of blocking roads during the annual
Ar'baeen trek, when his followers trekked from all over
the country to Zaria.
Gumi said blocking roads was an abomination in Islam.
The scholar said the North would be underdeveloped if
Shia and Boko Haram were not eradicated, adding:
"Unnecessary blocking of roads and shouting of slogans
increase tension in the North."
The Shi'ite group, however, said: "Gumi's allegation that
we ran a parallel govt is not true, because a government
exists when it has a standing army and a territory, which
we don't have. We don't even own a mosque, we pray
with other Muslims.
"How can there be two governments for 40 years in the
same territory without war? We pay taxes and are law-
abiding. For the past 40 years, nobody can claim we
attacked or molested him."
Meanwhile, the Leader of the Shi'ite Islamic sect Sheikh
Ibrahim El-Zakzaky was yesterday remanded in prison
custody by a chief magistrate and charged with criminal
conspiracy and inciting public disturbances.
He was arraigned at the Chief Magistrates' Court 1, Zaria
Road, Kaduna alongside some of his followers.
Police spokesperson Olabisi Kolawole confirmed the
arraignment and remand of the Shi'ite leader.
She said: "The Shi'ite leader has been arraigned at a
magistrates' court and charged with criminal conspiracy,
inciting public disturbances, among others. He has been
remanded in prison custody and the case adjourned."
The Shi'ite leader was arrested after his members
blocked the path of the Chief of Army Staff in Zaria,
leading to a clash with soldiers. Many sect members
were killed.
Army Chief Lt.-Gen Tukur Buratai said last week that he
was no longer in the custody of the army, but with the
agency of government responsible for prosecution of
suspects.
Inspector General of Police Solomon Arase confirmed that
the Islamic leader was with them.

Fun FactsAdamawa State Governor Muhammed Bindow has said he did not received a personal gift of N500 million from former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as being peddled in some quarters.
The governor, who made the clarification through phone call with journalists on Wednesday, explained that the money was donated by the former vice president to facilitate the prosecution of the 2015 governorship and assembly elections campaign activities of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.
"Contrary to the allegation which has gone viral in the social media; I didn't receive the sum of N500 million from the former vice president as a personal gift.
"The former vice president donated the money for the APC governorship and state assembly campaign activities and not to Mohammed Umaru Jibrilla Bindow.
"The former vice president demanded to know how much the APC governorship and state assembly campaign committee will need to ensure effective prosecution of the campaign.
"A bill of N300 million was forwarded to him, but he gave N500 million for the exercise as part of his contribution as a party loyalist.
"The money was released by the former vice president after the conclusion of the APC presidential primaries.
"It is expedient for me to put the record straight because the allegations have gone viral in some online media that I have received a personal gift of N500 million from Atiku Abubakar.
"This clarification is also necessary for posterity and clarity.
"The former vice president is an elder statesman in Adamawa and it is part of his social responsibility as a senior citizen, APC key stakeholder and political mentor to assist the party in its campaign activities,'' he stressed.
The governor urged journalists to always cross check their information before publishing same in the interest of fairness and objective journalism.
Bindow advised journalists to always exercise caution by adhering strictly to the ethics of the profession which emphasized the need to authenticate information, ensure fairness, balance and objectivity in the reportage of events.

The Islamic Movement in Nigeria has described the visit by the Kaduna state Council of Imams and Ulama to the Governor of Kaduna state, Malam Nasir El-Rufai as a sectarian agenda.
A statement by the spokesperson of the movement, Ibrahim Musa issued yesterday in Kaduna said the sectarian agenda is poisonous to the quest of well-meaning Muslim scholars.
He said, "The Kaduna State Council of Imams and Ulama visited the Kaduna State Governor El-Rufai and declared support for the recent brutal killings of hundreds if not thousands plus of defenseless Muslims in Zaria by the Nigerian Army. The Council is made up of Sunni and Wahhabi Mosque Imams.
"This is a sectarian agenda that is poisonous to the quest of well-meaning Muslim scholars for unity among Muslims. This open and shameful support for injustice could be viewed as a kind of pathological rivalry for a group they see growing in geometric proportions, and being opportunists, would clearly support a massacre no matter how unjustifiable.
"They see this as an opportunity to decimate their rivals. They have forgotten the Qur'anic injunctions that Allah Commanded the Muslims to be just to all and sundry. Due to the need for unity, millions of members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria under the leadership of His Eminence Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky didn't build separate mosques because Qur'an says mosques are for Allah and thus places for proclaiming and promoting unity.
"Sheikh Zakzaky ordered all his followers accordingly to pray in the existing Sunni-dominated mosques despite the massive anti-Shia propaganda taking place in most of these mosques. These they endured for the sake of unity.
"Rather than the Imams and Ulama to serve as the embodiment of Muslim unity, they are unfortunately actively working for selfish interests to massage some corrupt egos and sectarian interests. It must be condemned when mosque Imams become willing tools in the hands of corrupt Northern elites, who today form the notorious genocidal military-civilian cabal that is presently executing foreign-sponsored evil agenda against the peaceful IMN and its leadership."
He urged Muslim scholars and mosque Imams to work for unity and oneness of Muslims and not dance to the flute of sectarianism.

Fun FactsThe acting Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Mrs Roli Bode-George, has alerted members of the public that drug barons have invaded Facebook and other social media platforms for the recruitment of drug couriers.
Bode-George raised the alarm as the agency foiled an attempt by a drug trafficking organisation to recruit a 37-year-old lady, Ezeabata Uju Gloria, on Facebook as a drug courier under the guise of a marriage proposal.
She was to smuggle 1.325 kilogrammes of methamphetamine to Malaysia through the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos State when she was apprehended.
The arrest turned out to be a lifeline for the suspect as drug trafficking is punishable by death in Malaysia.
A suspected leader of the organisation who masterminded the aborted smuggling of methamphetamine to Malaysia was equally arrested.
According to Mrs Bode-George, "the agency has uncovered a plot by drug trafficking organisations to use the social media for recruitment of drug mules. After a painstaking surveillance, we have successfully foiled an attempt to smuggle drugs to Malaysia by a courier recruited online via Facebook.
"Members of the public should be wary of these antics, ascertain a wholesome relationship and report suspicious cases to the agency. Some of the tricks to watch out for include marriage proposals to unsuspecting female victims, unsolicited generosity like cash and other gift items as well as offering all-expense paid trip to Asia, Europe, America and South Africa."
The NDLEA boss commended the swift intervention of the agency that led to the arrest and subsequent prevention of the suspect from smuggling drugs to Malaysia where a Nigerian was recently sentenced to death for drug trafficking.
"The NDLEA will not relent in its statutory responsibility of saving lives and promoting healthy and peaceful society. This arrest is significant considering the fact that Malaysia recently sentenced a Nigerian to death for drug trafficking.
"The mode of recruitment is also instructive because of its mass appeal to youths. I expect lovers of social media to learn from this arrest. Meanwhile, we are working hard to dislodge drug cartels and halt their sinister plots," she assured.
NDLEA commander at the Lagos airport, Ahmadu Garba, who said that Ezeabata Uju Gloria was arrested following the discovery of methamphetamine in her luggage, declared: "Gloria was arrested during the screening of passengers on an Ethiopian Airline flight on her way to Malaysia at the departure hall.
"Substances that tested positive for methamphetamine weighing 1.325 kilogrammes were found in her luggage. The drug was concealed in 26 packs of Indomie noodles in a bag of foodstuff containing plantain, pepper, melon and other spices.
"Further investigation led to the arrest of one Philip Maduabuchi Akpaka, 39, who allegedly coordinated the travel arrangement for Gloria and gave her the bag containing the drugs."
In her statement, Gloria who claimed she worked with an accounting firm in Lagos admitted having a Facebook relationship that got her involved in drug trafficking.
"I met a man on Facebook some months ago who lives in Malaysia. He told me while chatting online that he is from my state, Anambra. After some months, he proposed to marry me and I requested that he come to Nigeria to meet with my parents as our custom demands. He promised to fulfil every marriage rites.
"Months later, he invited me to Malaysia promising to pay all the travel expenses. After several appeals, I decided to visit him. The day I was to travel, he told me to take along a bag of foodstuff sent by his mother from the village. I was given the bag at the airport but in the process of checking it in, the drug was discovered inside packs of noodles in the bag and I was arrested."
Philip also admitted preparing the travel documents of Gloria on the request of his friend based in Malaysia.
"I am a transporter. My friend in Malaysia asked me to prepare travel documents for Gloria. He also asked me to give a bag to Gloria to take to Malaysia," Philip stated.
