Chibok girls are still alive, journalist says
NewsDec 31, 2015
Ahmed Salkida, the only journalist known to have some access to the leadership of Boko Haram, says credible sources have told him the Chibok girls are still alive, with some refusing to convert to Islam, TheCable is reporting.
Over 300 schoolgirls were kidnapped from their dormitory in April 2014 and at least 219 of them are still believed to be in captivity, although there is yet no clue on their location.
During last night's media chat, President Buhari told the world there's no credible intelligence on the location of the girls even after several bombings targeting Boko Haram hideouts in Sambisa forest, sparking fears that the girls are probably no more.
But Salkida, in an op-ed for TheCable, suggested that President Muhammadu Buhari should use state machinery to open up access to the militants rather than say he has no clue on the kidnapped girls whose abductions sparked off the #BringBackOurGirls campaign.
Salkida wrote: "Most of the Chibok girls, whether they are split into groups or not, are alive, multiple credible sources have told me, and if a deal to release them will weaken national security and endanger the entire country, then the federal government shouldn't make a deal.
"I am confident that Chibok girls and other captives can return to their families if the government is half as strong-willed as some of the girls in captivity that have refused to be married out or give up their faith.
"The girls would have never backed out of any process, no matter how irritating it is. They would stay on and negotiate hard until they get a deal that will earn them their freedom and stop such abductions so that no one else can ever witness their woeful plight."
Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau — from whom nothing has been heard in the last 10 months — once released a video of the schoolgirls and said he had sold them off to marriage. All efforts to free the girls have failed.

Banning Hijab Is Escapist, Scapegoatism, Muric Tells Buhari

In a swift reply to President Buhari's option of banning the hijab if Boko Haram Suicide bombing's persist, an Islamic organisation, Muslims Right Concern (MURIC), has rejected the idea on the possibility of banning the hijab.
In a statement by the Director of the organisation, Ishaq Akintola, the group described banning hijab as an escapist and Scapegoatism move.
Full text of MURIC's statement reads:
President Muhammadu Buhari Yesterday evening hosted media executives to a presidential media chat. The president hinted on the possibility of imposing a ban on hijab in the near future if the bombings continue.
The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) rejects any idea of imposing a ban on hijab. It is escapist. It is scapegoatism. It will open the floodgates of anarchy. Instead of solving Nigeria's security problems, it is most likely to compound it.
If army and police uniforms are not banned although they are often used by bandits, why should we ban hijab? Security agents know how they often fish out hoodlums who use police and soldiers' uniforms to commit atrocities. The same method should be used to prevent the use of hijab for bombing.
What crime have Nigerian Muslim women committed that they should be derobed in public? Without their hijab, Muslim women feel as if they are naked. Users of hijab are in all walks of life. They are civil servants, business women, teachers, etc. Most importantly, they are tax payers and voters. They voted Buhari into power. Is Buhari's government warming up to encroach on Allah-given fundamental rights of Muslim women? Is this an appropriate pay-back?
Another dimension in the idea of banning hijab is the geographical area likely to be involved in the ban? Will it be limited to the three troubled states of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe? Will it extend to the whole North East or will the ban cover the whole of Nigeria?
The question also arises, Mr. President, if you ban hijab, what is the time frame? When will you deban it? Are we not likely to experience more religious upheavals after the ban as some religious zealots will want to capitalize on the ban by maltreating Muslim women? Will these religious fanatics who use the period of the ban to oppress Muslim women stop their repression even after hijab has been de-proscribed?
Has President Buhari pondered over the impact of the imposition of a state of emergency on those three states by the past administration? Did it stop insurgency? We posit that Boko Haram handlers will simply shift to other methods to conduct their nefarious activities. Already they have introduced suicide bombing by children. Is Buhari going to ban children from going out to the streets?
MURIC appreciates Mr. President's dilemma. We understand that Boko Haram must be defeated. But Muslim women must not be the scape goats.Nigerian Muslims will not succumb to a policy that dehumanizes their mothers, wives, daughters and sisters. Banning hijab tantamounts to institutionalizing the stereotyping of Muslim women. This is unacceptable.
Hijab is more than a covering for female Muslims. It is a unique identity for Muslim women. It is a mark of dignity and a symbol of piety. Hijab is an integral part of Islam, a microcosm in a macro. Whoever bans hijab has fired a shot at the religion of Islam. We, therefore, advise Mr. President to tread softly.
Hijab also represents chastity and innocence. By banning the hijab, Nigeria will be pronouncing its hypocrisy to the international community as a country which claims to be fighting HIV and AIDS yet it has failed to protect chastity and innocence. Whoever bans hijab has given unbridled licence to indecent dressing among women, its attendant sexual licentiousness and the exposure of society to its aftereffects.
Buhari and his security chiefs must, therefore, find other means of stopping the bombings. They should leave Muslim women alone. Nigeria's security agencies must sit up and device other means. There must be new initiatives and fresh ideas. Armchair crime-fighting is an anachronism. They must not use Muslim women as scapegoats. They must step up their intelligence gathering gimmicks.
On a final note, we opine that banning hijab will be a mark of victory for Boko Haram. The insurgents will celebrate their success in causing so much confusion and such wide division between the government and its Muslim citizenry.

FG won't accept plea bargain – Malami

Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN
The federal government won't compromise its fight against terrorism and financial crimes, the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN has said.
Malami said this in Abuja when BringBackOurGirls campaign movement visited him.
"I cannot imagine someone been responsible for monumental deaths of our citizens and then going scot-free arising from plea-bargain as a policy. It has never been the policy of the government to make compromises on terrorism and financial crimes. It will never be tolerated by the office of the AGF," he said.
He said the abduction of the school girls is "tormenting and psychologically traumatizing" for the nation.
"It is tragic for a nation to have a budget meant for arms procurement for the protection of lives and property of the citizens, and end up not having the arms but compromising the process of making adequate provisions for the protection of lives of its citizens," he said.
"The government of President Muhammadu Buhari has demonstrated sufficient skill and commitment to the protection of lives and property within the shortest practicable time of coming into existence, it has recorded tremendous success including confronting Sambisa forest head-on with the hope of rescuing the Chibok girls," the minister said.
Earlier, the group's co-convener and former minister of education, Oby Ezekwesili, told the minister that the inefficient governance of the immediate past government was largely responsible for the tragedy of the Chibok girls.
She recalled that since the advocacy for the Chibok girls began in April 2014, no concrete step was taken by the ex-President Goodluck Jonathan's administration to secure the safe return of the girls.
"In the movement, we over time realised that it is the failure of governance that resulted in the abduction of the Chibok girls and that corruption was the key obstacle to the rescue of the girls," she said.

Press Statement
"Media Chat Exposed Buhari's Undemocratic Character"- PDP
…Says President Should Apologize for Labeling Nigerians 'Difficult Lot'
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says President Muhammadu Buhari's responses at the Wednesday Presidential Media Chat were not only embarrassing but also further exposed his undemocratic character as an unrepentant tyrant who has no regard for the rule of law and the self-worth of Nigerian citizens.
The party, in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, ChiefOlisa Metuh, on Thursday also said the President confirmed his partisanship in the much-vaunted war against corruption by openly absolving his ministers and party members of corrupt practices.
"Whilst we restate our respect for the person and office of the President, we note that President Buhari bared his true colours to the world as an unrepentant tyrant. Today, the world is no longer in doubt as to who is behind the prevailing recklessness, abuse of rights of citizens and outright flouting of judicial pronouncements by security agencies.
"A situation where the President openly pronounced persons facingtrial guilty and sanctioned their continued incarceration despite being granted bail by the courts, presents a dangerous fascist practice obtainable only in totalitarian societies like Mussolini's Italy, Hitler's Germany, Idi Amin's Uganda and General Than Shwe's Burma.
"This extremely shocking dictatorial tendency being brazenly exhibited by the President in total disdain for our laws and judicial institutions portends great danger for our democracy and constitutionally-guaranteed rights of the people, and should be resisted by the citizens before it festers.
"The scorn for the principle of separation of powers, especially the independence of the legislature, is further manifested in the declared craving to regulate the fundingand running of the National Assembly, a matter constitutionally vested outside the jurisdiction of the executive. We are most uncomfortable about his attempt at trying to whip up public sentiments against an independent arm of government, especially the one vested with the constitutional power of appropriation.
"Following from the foregoing, therefore, it may be necessary to suspend the application of our Constitution and allow the President to operate as maximum ruler for four years after which the nation can return to a democracy.
"On the issue of the Chibok girls, President Buhari's embarrassing declaration of seeking information on the whereabouts and state of the girls betrays an obvious insincerity which is in total conflict with his campaign promises in that regard. Thus by this declaration, our dear President has accepted failure on this issue and should therefore apologise to Nigerians for all the insults, abuse and aspersions cast on the past administration by himself and the leadership of his political party.
"On the issue of devaluation of the naira, there is an obvious conflict between the budget speech wherein the president stated that the government is assessing the foreign exchange rate with a view to attracting foreign investments and his categorical pronouncement during the media chat that the naira would not be devalued. We invite Nigerians to note that the president obviously does not understand the currency that applies in the devaluation of the naira (laugh out loud).
"Furthermore, Nigerians were shocked by the President's labeling Nigerians as 'very difficult lot' while responding to questions on the strategy to be adopted in implementing his promised N5,000 social welfare package.
"This unhealthyportrayal of the citizens by the very father of the nation, who has remained unrelenting in de-marketing his country through unguarded statements, is indeed a great disservice to Nigeria and its international image.
Consequently, we reject this negative labeling of our citizens and reiterate our confidence in them, especially the millions who remain honest, hardworking and credible.
"Finally, Nigerians must take copious note of the fact that the President gave no inspiring answers to questions pertaining to his campaign promises, the fight against insurgency and rescue of the Chibok girls, the poor state of the naira, sudden plunging of the economy under his watch, and the gradual loss of democratic rights and freedom."

Shiites meet Reps, demand probe, Zakzaky's release

Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky
Members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria yesterday demanded the setting up of a judicial commission of inquiry to probe the killings of their members in Zaria on December 12 and 13, during its meeting with House of Representatives panel.
The movement also demanded for the unconditional release of their leader Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky and his wife who have been in the custody of security agencies since the incident.
Members of the movement made the demand when they appeared before a House of Representatives panel investigating the matter.
Although the meeting was held behind closed-door, a lawmaker at the meeting told Daily Trust last night that six members of the movement including some lawyers, chairman of their medical team, an associate professor from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria and the head of their education section were present.
It was also gathered that the movement members demanded for the corpses of their members for proper Islamic burial as well as the release of the injured for medical attention, alleging that hundreds of their members are currently detained in Kaduna prison without being charged to court.
The source said they told the committee that the killings were premeditated based on the way and manner they were carried out and sustained for more than 48 hours.
They said there was no reason for their leader and his wife would be held in custody for weeks without any information on his whereabouts without being charged to court.
It was wrong, they added, for anybody to refer to them as a sect, but that they are a movement comprising of adherents of Shia, Sunni, Tijjaniyya and even Christian priests.
The source added that they alleged that apart from killing scores and destroying their Hussainiyya centre, soldiers also went to where Zakzaky's mother was buried and tried to exhume her body and also destroyed their cemetery at Darur Rahma along Jos -Zaria road.
They further said that when the killings were going on, personnel of the Red Cross who attempted to render help to the injured and evacuate those killed were denied access by soldiers.
After listening to their submissions, the committee chairman Rep Aminu Sani Jaji (APC, Zamfara), said his committee would do a thorough investigation.
He said his committee would intervene for the release of Sheikh Zakzaky and other members of the movement in detention.
The lawmaker said the committee would also visit the movement Hussainiyya, Zakzaky's residence as well as the Darur Rahma, and other affected places to see for themselves.
He promised that he would ensure that justice is done no matter which of the two sides is found guilty.

Rat forces plane to turn back mid-flight

A plane travelling from Mumbai to London was forced to turn back mid-flight after a rat was spotted on board, local media report.

Flight AI 131 travelling to London on Wednesday was flying over Iran when someone on board said they spotted the rodent, reports said.

Passengers continued their journey on a replacement aircraft some time later.

Air India has said that the plane will be fumigated and the presence of a rodent was being investigated.

Rats occasionally get on board aircraft along with catering and other supplies but can pose a serious technical as well as a health hazard if they chew through wires.

It is the latest setback to hit the state-owned airline, which has had to cut costs to improve its financial health.

Earlier in December, an Air India technician was sucked into an aircraft engine and killed at Mumbai airport, reports the BBC.

Arms cash: PDP vice chairmen disown Bafarawa, others

Peoples Democratic Party's (PDP) national vice chairmen have dissociated themselves from some prominent members indicted in the $2.1 billion arms deal scandal perpetrated under the President Goodluck Jonathan administration.

The party chiefs also expressed support for President Muhammadu Buhari's anti-corruption war.

A number of PDP chieftains, including former Sokoto State Governor Attahiru Dalhatu Bafarawa and the immediate past National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, are on trial for their alleged roles in the scandal.

At a meeting in Abuja on Tuesday, the party vice chairmen agreed that the country's economic growth could be stunted, if corruption was not eradicated.

In a communique by PDP Vice Chairman, Southsouth, Dr. Cairo Ojougboh, the party chiefs dissociated the PDP from any corrupt practices while in power.

"The body notes with great concern the various allegations and charges against some PDP members that served in the previous government.

"Even as these allegations and charges are yet to be proved, we call on the President to also investigate some of his serving ministers and associates that even more grievous allegations have been levelled against," the communique said.

The party chiefs warned that disciplinary action would be taken against any of the party members convicted for corruption.

Stating PDP's position on the ideals of its founding fathers, they insisted on the adherence to the rule of law in the process leading to the trial of the suspects in the arms cash scandal.

They enjoined party members to remain resolute and wait for the party's pending repositioning, "where square pegs will be placed in square holes and justice and equity will prevail".

The communique reads: "Furthermore, we reaffirm that mediocres will no longer be allowed to govern the affairs of the party. Power will now be returned to the people at the grassroots.

"We make bold to say that those who are corrupt have left the party and those who left are indisputably mercenaries and soldiers of fortune.

"That in spite of having lost the presidential election, the PDP remains the largest party in Nigeria and Africa and we intend to keep it so.

"That the vast majority of PDP members at the grassroots are innocent and not corrupt and accordingly, we frown at and reject the notion and tagging of the PDP as a corrupt party.

"That Nigerians will realise soon that the PDP remains the only viable choice for the unity and progress of Nigeria.

"The body hereby commends our governors who are the leaders in the states and reiterate our call on them to remain resolute and steadfast."

958 passengers from 10 African countries stranded at Calabar seaport

About 958 passengers from 10 countries are now stranded at the Calabar seaport following a breakdown of a passenger vessel, Emilians – Carneiro, conveying them from Gabon along the coast of West Africa.

Director general, Cross River State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, Mr. John Inaku and the zonal coordinator, South South, National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, Mr. Ben Ogbemah, broke the news to journalists, saying the information they had given to the media is true and that they had just returned from the Calabar port after visiting the stranded passengers to assess the situation.

Mr. Inaku described the situation as pathetic and assured that the Nigerian government would do everything possible to provide victims with adequate security and comfort.

He said the stranded passengers who include nationals of Nigeria, Benin Republic, Congo, Togo, Burkina Faso, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Ghana, Mali, Niger and Guinea are languishing at the Calabar Port.

He said: "As a result of the problem, two hundred Nigerians who were on board the ship have disembarked and left by road to their various states.

The remaining 758 persons comprising children and 690 adults have been passing through turbulent times since the past one week."

According to him, the breakdown of the ship which occurred on December 25 was alleged to have been caused by a leakage on its floor and the malfunctioning of one of its engines.

The victims who are at the facilities of the Sureline Logistics Nigeria Limited lack food, water, sanitation and clothing for the children.

He appealed to them to remain calm and obedient to constituted authorities in order to ease their transit to their various countries.

Mr. Ogbenah who was represented by an assessment officer, Mr. Abia Ufok, charged them to remain calm and peaceful while waiting for interventions from relevant authorities.

He expressed gratitude to God for protecting them against a mishap that would have sunk the ship on the high sea.

Narrating the ordeal that warranted the berthing of the ship at the Calabar Port, captain of the vessel, Mr. Manuel Uluaresma, who spoke through an interpreter, said the vessel was conveying passengers from Garbon to Benen Republic and other coast of west African countries when one of its engines started malfunctioning on the high sea while a leakage on the floor of the ship was observed.

He said due to the intensity of the situation it became obvious that the vessels could not get to its destination and therefore, for reasons of safety and protection of life of the passengers, decided to berth at the Calabar port.

Addressing the people, Mr. Inaku described the situation as pathetic and assured that the Nigerian government would do everything possible to provide them with adequate security and necessary comfort.

The captain of the vessel assured that concrete arrangements had been made to convey the stranded passenger by road to their various destinations at no cost to them since they had paid their fares to board the ship.

One of the passengers, Abdullsalamadu Harma, from Niger Republic, said they were unhappy because there have been a break in communication between the passengers and the ship authorities.

Mr. Acheoukpa Parfait of Benen Republic said he had planned to celebrate the Christmas with his family back home but had been stuck in Calabar.

WAR AGAINST BOKO HARAM LARGELY WON, MINISTER INSISTS
Minister of Information and Culture Alhaji Lai Mohammed insisted yesterday that the military had largely met the deadline given to it by President Muhammadu Buhari to defeat Boko Haram, despite attacks by the terrorists.
Mohammed, who spoke at a meeting with editors in Lagos, explained: "In a few days, the deadline issued by President Muhammadu Buhari to the military to defeat Boko Haram will expire. Without equivocating, I will repeat what I said that has sparked a firestorm: Our gallant military has largely met the deadline! I make this assertion with all sense of responsibility and they are backed by facts."
He reiterated his earlier statement that the military has massively degraded the capacity of the terrorists to carry out the kind of spectacular attacks they used to execute in the past, like the attacks on the police headquarters and the United Nations (UN) Complex.
The minister noted that in six months of the Buhari administration, the Boko Haram that was in control of a territory larger than a geopolitical zone in Nigeria "has been reduced to a fleeing, bomb throwing, cowardly and disorganised army".
He added: ''Among the areas where Boko Haram has been kicked out is Bama, which was the self-declared headquarters of its Caliphate. From there, it collected taxes, dispensed jungle justice, deposed and installed emirs and hoisted its flag. Today, the town is firmly in the hands of our troops."
He said all Boko Haram could do now was to attack soft targets as markets, motor parks, mosques and entertainment centres, killing innocent men, women and children.
Mohammed said: "Not unexpectedly, the dying and desperate insurgents have carried out some attacks on soft targets in the Northeast during this festive season. This is cowardly, dastardly and condemnable. We commiserate with the state governments and the families of those who died or were injured in the attacks which, as I said earlier, are like the death pangs of a dying horse.
"These attacks are part of the propaganda that has been launched by Boko Haram and their fellow terrorists, ISIS, to seek to remain relevant in the face of massive routing by our gallant troops, and to also discredit our committed and patriotic troops. But the attacks do not shake our resolve a bit in our determined quest to rid our nation of terrorists and ensure the security of our citizens
"The fact that Boko Haram has continued to carry out attacks on soft targets is not an indication that they still have capacity. As I have said many times, the attacks will not end with the expiration of the deadline, since insurgencies are not conventional warfare in which the guns could be silenced with an armistice. But I also said that the attacks will taper off with time, with better awareness among the citizenry and enhanced intelligence gathering by the security agencies."
The minister challenged critics of his assertion that the military had largely met the deadline to visit the epicentre of the war against terrorists in Borno State and then report to Nigerians what they saw.
"The armchair critics, who dispute these facts from the comfort of their living rooms, are free to visit the theatre of war to see things for themselves. Perhaps then, they will be more circumspecting in issuing reckless statements that give nothing but succour to Boko Haram. I have gone to the theatre of war to see things for myself. I did not just stop in Maiduguri, I went to Konduga, Kaure and Bama, which, as I said, was once the headquarters of the Boko Haram Caliphate," Mohammed said.
He repeated his appeal to the media to stop glamourising Boko Haram with its reporting of the terrorist attacks and hailed the newspapers that took it upon themselves to push Boko Haram off their front pages.
"I want to appeal to other newspapers to follow suit and cut off the oxygen supply to the comatose Boko Haram by denying the terrorists the publicity they so much seek. This is purely an appeal, as we have no intention whatsoever to censor any media organisation,'' the minister said.
Mohammed hailed the Civilian JTF members that have played a major role in assisting the military to rout the terrorists, noting that what was now missing in the war was the civilian component.
"In this regard, we have kick-started a campaign to raise awareness among Nigerians on the war, so that the citizens will not only support the war, but they will also own it. It is the war for Nigerians, not a war for the military alone.
"As the military enters the mop-up phase of this war, what is left now is the onerous task of resettlement, rehabilitation and reconstruction, especially in the Northeast, which is worse-hit by the war. We appeal for support from Nigerians in this regard, because the government alone cannot handle this task,'' he said.

Yar'adua Told Me
Iran Supplies Arms
To The Shi'ites –
Sheik Gumi.

Kaduna-based Islamic scholar Sheikh Ahmad Abubakar
Gumi said ex-President Umaru Yar'adua told him of the
massive importation of arms and ammunition in parts of
the country, citing Iran as a supplier of arms to the
Shi'ites.
He further alleged that Sheikh El-Zakzaky ran a parallel
government in the North for 40 years.
Addressing reporters yesterday, Gumi said: "The Shi'ites
have been embarking on military training and producing
cadets and soldiers. They are operating a state within a
state."
According to him, "the Islamic Movement of Nigeria does
not recognise the corporate entity of the country. The
group is not registered. Members operate above the law
and get direct foreign aid."
The doctor-turned Islamic scholar said the clash between
Shi'ites and soldiers was "a divine intervention to prevent
us from a catastrophe as that of Boko Haram."
He said he wrote Zakzaky about a year ago, warning him
about the dangers of blocking roads during the annual
Ar'baeen trek, when his followers trekked from all over
the country to Zaria.
Gumi said blocking roads was an abomination in Islam.
The scholar said the North would be underdeveloped if
Shia and Boko Haram were not eradicated, adding:
"Unnecessary blocking of roads and shouting of slogans
increase tension in the North."
The Shi'ite group, however, said: "Gumi's allegation that
we ran a parallel govt is not true, because a government
exists when it has a standing army and a territory, which
we don't have. We don't even own a mosque, we pray
with other Muslims.
"How can there be two governments for 40 years in the
same territory without war? We pay taxes and are law-
abiding. For the past 40 years, nobody can claim we
attacked or molested him."
Meanwhile, the Leader of the Shi'ite Islamic sect Sheikh
Ibrahim El-Zakzaky was yesterday remanded in prison
custody by a chief magistrate and charged with criminal
conspiracy and inciting public disturbances.
He was arraigned at the Chief Magistrates' Court 1, Zaria
Road, Kaduna alongside some of his followers.
Police spokesperson Olabisi Kolawole confirmed the
arraignment and remand of the Shi'ite leader.
She said: "The Shi'ite leader has been arraigned at a
magistrates' court and charged with criminal conspiracy,
inciting public disturbances, among others. He has been
remanded in prison custody and the case adjourned."
The Shi'ite leader was arrested after his members
blocked the path of the Chief of Army Staff in Zaria,
leading to a clash with soldiers. Many sect members
were killed.
Army Chief Lt.-Gen Tukur Buratai said last week that he
was no longer in the custody of the army, but with the
agency of government responsible for prosecution of
suspects.
Inspector General of Police Solomon Arase confirmed that
the Islamic leader was with them.

WIFE PLEADS FOR MERCY AS EX-NSA IS RE-ARRESTED
Former National Security Adviser (NSA) Sambo Dasuki's health is bad, his wife has said, pleading for his freedom.
Mrs Dasuki created a scene at the headquarters of the Department of State Security Service (DSS) on Tuesday night when she begged top officials of the agency not to allow her husband die in custody.
She and other relations had waited patiently for Dasuki to meet the last peg of his bail conditions, a surety with about N250million property.
But immediately Dasuki was released at the prison, he was re-arrested by the DSS.
After several hours of trying to locate her husband, she returned to the DSS office and demanded for him or in the alternative, she should be locked up with him.
She reportedly said: "Nigerians should help me beg the Federal Government, the DSS and other agencies to release my husband who did his best to serve this nation. He is ill, he needs medical attention, he is not pretending. I implore the DSS not to allow him to die in custody.
"I saw my husband and I felt dejected. He is not just well. Nigerians should assist him to get a reprieve. We(myself, the children and relations) are all destabilised. We don't know what is happening because three courts have granted him bail. Why are they after him? Let those concerned respect the court by releasing my husband.
"There is no way my husband will run away from the country under any guise. They should please follow the rule of law and uphold his right to bail."
A source said Dasuki's wife was allowed to see her husband.
"We have followed the rule of law , the ex-NSA is in safe custody. He was once in DSS custody and he was never maltreated and he had access to medicare," the source said.
A judge of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Justice Peter Affen last Wednesday banned the EFCC from re-arresting Dasuki, ex-Minister Bashir Yuguda, former Director of Finance at the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) Shuaibu Salisu, Sagir Attahiru and former Governor Attahiru Dalhatu Bafarawa.
The order of the court followed the granting of the application for bail by counsel to the defendants, including Peter Akper (SAN); Ahmed Raji (SAN); Dr. J. O. Olatoke (SAN); H.O. Afolabi (SAN) and A.U Mustapha.
As at press time, all the accused persons were perfecting their bail conditions.
Those whose bail terms have been approved are Salisu; Bafarawa, ex-NNPC Executive Director Aminu Babakusa and others.
DSS operatives refused to allow Dasuki to go home on bail even after he had perfected his bail consitions.
Counsel to Dasuki Mr. Ahmed Raji (SAN)confirmed to PRNigeria that the former NSA had met all the bail conditions given by Justice Affem but regretted that the court order was not obeyed by the DSS.
Raji who perfected the bail condition of his client disclosed that the actions of the security agents was an affront to the rule of law.

Bafarawa Says He Supports PMB's Anti-corruption War

A former governor of Sokoto state, Alhaji Attahiru Bafarawa, has supported President Buhari's ongoing war against corruption.

Attahiru Bafarawa, a former governor of Sokoto state, is also one of the accomplice reportedly mentioned by the former NSA.

Bafarawa, who is standing trial in the ongoing arms deal corruption trial, told newsmen this earlier today, December 30 in Sokoto.

"In spite of our ongoing trial by the court in relation to the arms deal allegations, I still support Buhari's anti-corruption war. Nigerians should support the President's efforts to tame the social monster, corruption as it stalls the even socio-economic development of the nation.

"I also fought corruption to a standstill when I was a governor in Sokoto State between 1999 and 2007. That was why I was able to leave over N12 billion in the coffers of the state when I left office in 2007. I have taken the matter as an act of God and I am happy that Allah has enabled me to take it as such.

"As for me, I will not comment on any issues now since the matter is currently in the court," he said.

Meanwhile, there are reports that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has disowned itself from every party member involved in the theft of the $2.1 billion arms deal, including Bafarawa.

Ghana's government said on Wednesday it had fixed an electricity supply deficit that caused years of frequent blackouts that hurt businesses and angered voters ahead of an election next year. The power cuts, known as "dumsor" in Ghana, have been a hot political topic with many residents suffering 24-hour blackouts. President John Mahama promised in February to fix them by the New Year and Power Minister Kwabena Donkor also said he would resign if the deadline was not met.

THE PRESIDENT'S FIRST MEDIA CHAT AS SUMMARIZED BY PUNCH...
On the clash between Shi'ites and the Nigerian Army in Zaria and his silence
i. I have allowed the army and the Kaduna State government to come up with their reports before I come out to speak on the clash. This does not mean that the police and the DSS are not doing their part.
ii. The situation in Zaria is very serious… How can one group create a state within a state?
On the state of tertiary institutions
I don't like the idea of University students sitting on windows to receive lectures.
On whether he actually promised to pay unemployed youths N5,000
I cannot come here and deny that.
Foreign exchange restrictions
I. We need power, railways, roads… These are our priorities; not people looking for money to bring in rice (to the country).
II.Foreign exchange will be made available to the productive sector of the economy and not for luxury items.
On calls for the devaluation of the naira
I need to be convinced about devaluing the naira.
On asset declaration
I declared my assets four times… I don't have to ask them (Code of Conduct Bureau) to give you the asset declaration… You have a constitutional right to the documents.
On the continued bomb attacks in parts of the North-East
I. The Hijab will have to be banned if this (the suicide bombing) continues.
On the debate about fuel subsidy
By the end of the next quarter, we will not be talking about subsidy. How much is the price of
fuel (in the international market) now?
Reported plans by the National Assembly to spend billions on cars
I cannot see the National Assembly spending N45bn to buy cars on top of the transport allowance they collect.
On the pace of the anti-corruption war
I. Our major constraint is that accused person must go to court first and under such circumstances, we cannot prejudge what the courts will do but there are documents and how the government will react through the Ministry of Justice will determine what we will do because what we are going so we cannot determine issues while they are still in court.
II. If any member of my cabinet is corrupt, I will sack the person.
III. Members of the cabinet are supposed to declare their assets.
On whether funds have been recovered from looters
I. Money has been recovered but the fact that whatever we recover will end up in court because Nigerians will always want to know the truth and the truth will be what the courts have discovered by the submission made to them in terms of bank statements where money was recovered, where money was lodged, when it was lodged, how it was lodged whether it was money from petrol, customs and excise or money directly from the Central Bank. When we do that I think Nigerians will feel a bit better.
II. It is a very nasty situation that we are in, but we cannot fold our hands and not do anything; we are doing our best.
Chibok girls
We are keeping our options open. We are prepared to negotiate with Boko Haram for the girls… There is no firm intelligence where those girls physically are and what conditions they are in but what we learnt from our intelligence is that they (terrorists) kept on shifting them around so that they are not taken by surprise and they get freed. And a whole lot of them are not in one place and we don't know how many divisions they have and where they are. There is no intelligence to say that the girls are alive and in one place. That is the honest truth.
On the agitation for Biafra over alleged marginalisation
We have Boko Haram and then Biafra. Help me define the extent of marginalisation. Who is marginalising them? Why? How? Do you know? … The constitution said there must be a minister from each state. Who is the Minister of Petroleum? Is he not Igbo? Who is the Governor of Central Bank? Is he not Igbo? Who is the Minister of Labour? Who is the Minister of Science and Technology? Who is the junior minister of education?
On the continued detention of suspected looters and alleged violation of court orders by the DSS
You can see the type atrocities that those people committed against soldiers and the country. The former president goes to the governor of the Central Bank and say, 'give N40bn to so, so, so… And then he fails to account for it and you allow him to go and see his daughter in London while and you have two million people in IDPs, half of them don't even know their parents. Which kind of country do you want to run?
And the one you are calling Kanu. Do you know he has two passports – one Nigerian, one British – and he came to this country without any passport?… There are criminal allegations against him and I hope the court will listen to the case.

Gov. Bindow Denies Receiving N500m Personal Gift From Atiku Abubakar

Adamawa State Governor Muhammed Bindow has said he did not received a personal gift of N500 million from former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as being peddled in some quarters.

The governor, who made the clarification through phone call with journalists on Wednesday, explained that the money was donated by the former vice president to facilitate the prosecution of the 2015 governorship and assembly elections campaign activities of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.

"Contrary to the allegation which has gone viral in the social media; I didn't receive the sum of N500 million from the former vice president as a personal gift.

"The former vice president donated the money for the APC governorship and state assembly campaign activities and not to Mohammed Umaru Jibrilla Bindow.

"The former vice president demanded to know how much the APC governorship and state assembly campaign committee will need to ensure effective prosecution of the campaign.

"A bill of N300 million was forwarded to him, but he gave N500 million for the exercise as part of his contribution as a party loyalist.

"The money was released by the former vice president after the conclusion of the APC presidential primaries.

"It is expedient for me to put the record straight because the allegations have gone viral in some online media that I have received a personal gift of N500 million from Atiku Abubakar.

"This clarification is also necessary for posterity and clarity.

"The former vice president is an elder statesman in Adamawa and it is part of his social responsibility as a senior citizen, APC key stakeholder and political mentor to assist the party in its campaign activities,'' he stressed.

The governor urged journalists to always cross check their information before publishing same in the interest of fairness and objective journalism.

Bindow advised journalists to always exercise caution by adhering strictly to the ethics of the profession which emphasized the need to authenticate information, ensure fairness, balance and objectivity in the reportage of events.

EXPOSED! - MASSIVE MONEY LAUNDERING AT THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY!
Report by the Premium Times.
Published on 30/12/2015.
Nigeria's lawmaking body, the National Assembly, is entangled in horrid abuse of the nation's financial regulations, especially in its banking transactions, in the last six years, PREMIUM TIMES can authoritativelyreport. Investigation by this newspaper, spanning weeks, revealed that between 2009 and 2015, the management arm of the federal legislature led by the Clerk, Salisu Maikasuwa, his predecessor, Yemi Ogunyomi, and their representatives, extensively violated the Money Laundering Act (2004, 2011) in banking transactions leading to the withdrawals of about N42 billion of public funds.
Some members of the lawmaking arms of the legislature – Senate and the House of Representatives– were also involved in the violation of an Act they laboured for months to enact.
Documents exclusively obtained by PREMIUM TIMES showed that the a huge chunk of the funds were withdrawn at different times in cash from Senate Accounts Numbers 321/212606/1/1/0 and 321/212606/1/1/3; House of RepresentativesAccount Numbers 321/212606/1/1/1 and 321/212606/1/1/2; National Assembly Management Account Number 321/212603/1/1/0; as well as the National Assembly Service Wide vote Account 326/253550/1/1/0 and 326/253525/1/1/0, all domiciled in the Guarantee Trust Bank.
The withdrawals were made without recourse to the Money Laundering Act, 2011 and 2004. Other huge withdrawals were also made from Account Number 1007323323 domiciled in the United Bank for Africa within the same period.
While a total of N26.69 billion involving 149 beneficiaries was drawn from the GTB accounts, N15.85 billion, involving 222 beneficiaries, was taken out of UBA. The cash withdrawals, at times higher than what is allowed by law, were so frequent that from 2013, UBA began to place transaction charges on them.
Between October 3, 2013 and August 19, 2015, the bank realized a total of N83.87m from the charges imposed on the transactions. But the GTB failed to apply charges as required by regulations, allowing the beneficiaries to make withdrawals against the law, records seen by PREMIUM TIMES show.
Insiders say the money paid as charges to the bank for excess cash withdrawals was never budgeted for by the National Assembly.
Part 1, Subsection 1 of the Money Laundering Act 2011 states that "No person or body corporate shall, except in a transaction through a financial institution, make or accept cash payment of a sum exceeding- (a) N5,000,000.00 or its equivalent, in the case of an individual; or (b)N10,000,000.00 or its equivalent in the case of a body corporate".
It also states, "Any Financial Institution or Designated-Financial Institution that fails to comply with the above provision by making the appropriate compliance report to the regulatory authorities commits an offence and is liable on conviction to a fine of not less than N250,000:00 (Two Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira) for an individual and not more than N1,000,000 (One Million Naira) for a body corporate, for each day that the contravention continues unabated."
The 2004 version of Act, repealed by the current one, states that "no person or corporation or organisation is allowed to make or accept cash payments of a sum in excess of N500,000.00 or its equivalent in the case of an individual, and N2,000,000.00 or its equivalent in the case of a corporation, unless such cash payment or acceptance is undertaken through a financial institution."
According to the documents in the possession of this newspaper, the excessive cash withdrawals spanned the tenures of three Clerks to the National Assembly — Nasiru Arab, Yemi Ogunyomi and the incumbent, Mr. Maikasuwa — with the largest withdrawals made during the reign of the last two.
Mr. Arab was clerk from 2005 to October 2009 while Mr. Ogunyomi occupied that office between October 2009 and April 2010 both as acting and substantive clerk. Mr. Maikasuwa succeeded Mr. Ogunyomi, first in acting capacity, and later as substantive clerk from August 2011.
Between 2009 and 2015, Messrs Arab, Ogunyomi and Maikasuwa, listed as permanent secretary/clerk in the withdrawal documents, withdrew a total of N6.37 billion from GTB and UBA.
While the sum of N4.78 billion was withdrawn by both men from GTB between September 9, 2009 and August 14, 2015, a total of N1.59 billion was withdrawn from the UBA between January 1, 2011 and August 8, 2015 by Mr. Maikasuwa.

Ulama's visit to El-Rufai, a sectarian agenda – Shi'ite

The Islamic Movement in Nigeria has described the visit by the Kaduna state Council of Imams and Ulama to the Governor of Kaduna state, Malam Nasir El-Rufai as a sectarian agenda.
A statement by the spokesperson of the movement, Ibrahim Musa issued yesterday in Kaduna said the sectarian agenda is poisonous to the quest of well-meaning Muslim scholars.
He said, "The Kaduna State Council of Imams and Ulama visited the Kaduna State Governor El-Rufai and declared support for the recent brutal killings of hundreds if not thousands plus of defenseless Muslims in Zaria by the Nigerian Army. The Council is made up of Sunni and Wahhabi Mosque Imams.
"This is a sectarian agenda that is poisonous to the quest of well-meaning Muslim scholars for unity among Muslims. This open and shameful support for injustice could be viewed as a kind of pathological rivalry for a group they see growing in geometric proportions, and being opportunists, would clearly support a massacre no matter how unjustifiable.
"They see this as an opportunity to decimate their rivals. They have forgotten the Qur'anic injunctions that Allah Commanded the Muslims to be just to all and sundry. Due to the need for unity, millions of members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria under the leadership of His Eminence Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky didn't build separate mosques because Qur'an says mosques are for Allah and thus places for proclaiming and promoting unity.
"Sheikh Zakzaky ordered all his followers accordingly to pray in the existing Sunni-dominated mosques despite the massive anti-Shia propaganda taking place in most of these mosques. These they endured for the sake of unity.
"Rather than the Imams and Ulama to serve as the embodiment of Muslim unity, they are unfortunately actively working for selfish interests to massage some corrupt egos and sectarian interests. It must be condemned when mosque Imams become willing tools in the hands of corrupt Northern elites, who today form the notorious genocidal military-civilian cabal that is presently executing foreign-sponsored evil agenda against the peaceful IMN and its leadership."
He urged Muslim scholars and mosque Imams to work for unity and oneness of Muslims and not dance to the flute of sectarianism.

Drug Barons Now Recruit On Facebook, Others, NDLE Raises Alarm

The acting Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Mrs Roli Bode-George, has alerted members of the public that drug barons have invaded Facebook and other social media platforms for the recruitment of drug couriers.
Bode-George raised the alarm as the agency foiled an attempt by a drug trafficking organisation to recruit a 37-year-old lady, Ezeabata Uju Gloria, on Facebook as a drug courier under the guise of a marriage proposal.
She was to smuggle 1.325 kilogrammes of methamphetamine to Malaysia through the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos State when she was apprehended.
The arrest turned out to be a lifeline for the suspect as drug trafficking is punishable by death in Malaysia.
A suspected leader of the organisation who masterminded the aborted smuggling of methamphetamine to Malaysia was equally arrested.
According to Mrs Bode-George, "the agency has uncovered a plot by drug trafficking organisations to use the social media for recruitment of drug mules. After a painstaking surveillance, we have successfully foiled an attempt to smuggle drugs to Malaysia by a courier recruited online via Facebook.
"Members of the public should be wary of these antics, ascertain a wholesome relationship and report suspicious cases to the agency. Some of the tricks to watch out for include marriage proposals to unsuspecting female victims, unsolicited generosity like cash and other gift items as well as offering all-expense paid trip to Asia, Europe, America and South Africa."
The NDLEA boss commended the swift intervention of the agency that led to the arrest and subsequent prevention of the suspect from smuggling drugs to Malaysia where a Nigerian was recently sentenced to death for drug trafficking.
"The NDLEA will not relent in its statutory responsibility of saving lives and promoting healthy and peaceful society. This arrest is significant considering the fact that Malaysia recently sentenced a Nigerian to death for drug trafficking.
"The mode of recruitment is also instructive because of its mass appeal to youths. I expect lovers of social media to learn from this arrest. Meanwhile, we are working hard to dislodge drug cartels and halt their sinister plots," she assured.
NDLEA commander at the Lagos airport, Ahmadu Garba, who said that Ezeabata Uju Gloria was arrested following the discovery of methamphetamine in her luggage, declared: "Gloria was arrested during the screening of passengers on an Ethiopian Airline flight on her way to Malaysia at the departure hall.
"Substances that tested positive for methamphetamine weighing 1.325 kilogrammes were found in her luggage. The drug was concealed in 26 packs of Indomie noodles in a bag of foodstuff containing plantain, pepper, melon and other spices.
"Further investigation led to the arrest of one Philip Maduabuchi Akpaka, 39, who allegedly coordinated the travel arrangement for Gloria and gave her the bag containing the drugs."
In her statement, Gloria who claimed she worked with an accounting firm in Lagos admitted having a Facebook relationship that got her involved in drug trafficking.
"I met a man on Facebook some months ago who lives in Malaysia. He told me while chatting online that he is from my state, Anambra. After some months, he proposed to marry me and I requested that he come to Nigeria to meet with my parents as our custom demands. He promised to fulfil every marriage rites.
"Months later, he invited me to Malaysia promising to pay all the travel expenses. After several appeals, I decided to visit him. The day I was to travel, he told me to take along a bag of foodstuff sent by his mother from the village. I was given the bag at the airport but in the process of checking it in, the drug was discovered inside packs of noodles in the bag and I was arrested."
Philip also admitted preparing the travel documents of Gloria on the request of his friend based in Malaysia.
"I am a transporter. My friend in Malaysia asked me to prepare travel documents for Gloria. He also asked me to give a bag to Gloria to take to Malaysia," Philip stated.
