Controversial: US Secretary of State, John Kerry, quotes Lai Mohammed at World Economic Forum
-
At the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, the United States Secretary of State, John Kerry, delivered a speech which sounded like it was coming straight out of Nigeria's presidential villa, but delivered better than the occupants of the villa usually present it.
Talking about corruption, Kerry said, "When Nigeria's President Buhari took office last spring, he inherited a military that was underpaid, underfed and unable to protect the Nigerian people from Boko Haram. And one reason is that much of the military budget was finding it's way into the pocket of the generals. And just this week we saw reports that more than fifty people in Nigeria, including former government officials, stole $9bn from the treasury. Still in the United States, my friends, we continue to prosecute corruption… "
The "reports" which John Kerry was quoting, was a press statement by Nigeria's minister of information and culture last Monday in which he alleged that in the "period 2006 and 2013, just 55 people allegedly stole a total of 1.34 trillion Naira in Nigeria. That's more than a quarter of last year's national budget."
Mohammed alleged that 15 former governors stole N146.84 billion; while 4 former ministers stole N7 billion; 12 former public servants, both at federal and state levels, stole over N14 billion; 8 people in the banking Industry allegedly stole N524 billion; while 11 businessmen allegedly stole N653 billion.
"This is the money that a few people, just 55 in number, allegedly stole within a period of just eight years. And instead of a national outrage, all we hear are these nonsensical statements that the government is fighting only the opposition, or that the government is engaging in vendetta.
"If you have stolen public funds, you must not go scot-free. Everyone and every arm of government must rise up to be counted in this epic war, and defeat is not an option if our country is to survive.
"As President Muhammadu Buhari likes to say, if we don't kill corruption, corruption will kill Nigeria. There is no better way to say it," he said.

Return Money Or God Will Punish You - Fashola Warns Looters

As more bizarre revelation on looting within Nigeria continues to emerge, looters have received a warning to return stolen funds or face divine wrath.
The Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama'at has warned those who looted the nation's economy to return them or face God's punishment.
It gave this remark in Lagos as it commenced activities to mark its 100 years of existence in Nigeria and 127 years of the group's establishment in the world.
The Head of the group in Nigeria, Mashuud Fashola, who addressed a press conference in Lagos on Thursday, was speaking against the backdrop of the revelations linking many top politicians to the $2.1bn arms deal allegedly diverted by the former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, during the tenure of former President Goodluck Jonathan.
Fashola warned those he called "self centered Nigerians" who plundered the nation's resources of the wrath of God, if they did not return the stolen commonwealth.
Fashola expressed appreciation to God for the growth of the Islamic organisation in Nigeria since 1916 when it was introduced in the country.
He added that "when the United States said Nigeria government was not sincere in fighting insurgents then, we thought they didn't want to help but with the Dasuki arms-gate saga, it shows they know what they were talking about."
The Missionary in Charge, Ahmadiyyah Muslim, Abdul-Khalique Sahib, prayed for peaceful coexistence in Nigeria and the current efforts to combat the Lassa fever epidemic.

"I feel ashamed to be linked with arms scandal" – Falae
-
The National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party, Chief Olu Falae, on Thursday said he was ashamed to be linked with a former National Security Adviser, Col Sambo Dasuki (retd), and the $2.1bn arms scandal.

Falae, who spoke on the scandal during the National Executive Council meeting of SDP in Abuja, said he would open up next week on the controversial N100m that he collected from the former chairman, Board of Trustees, Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Tony Anenih, and "silence the blackmailers."

The money is said to have been part of the $2.1bn meant for the procurement of weapons for the fight against Boko Haram.

Falae, however, said the last time he saw Dasuki was in 1987, when he was Secretary to the Government of the Federation, during the administration of ex-President Ibrahim Babangida.

He said, "For people to even mention my name in connection with Dasuki, I feel ashamed for Nigerians to even say such a thing. It is wicked and a sin against God. I am sure they know that what I am saying is the truth; that there was no connection between SDP or myself with Dasuki.

"We did not take any money from Dasuki. The money sent to us was by the PDP based on the exchange of letters between us, which establishes the contract.

"Some people are still writing spurious nonsense but I intend to address the press sometimes next week, probably in Lagos, to tell my story so everybody can hear and the blackmailers can shut up forever.

"I said this because I can't come here without addressing this issue, so that you you know what you take home. We are very proud of the way we have handled this matter."

He expressed confidence that the SDP would overcome what he described as a campaign of calumny by certain forces to discredit its leadership.

He added, "I have said so several times and I will say so now that as a believer in God, I did not collect even one naira from Col. Dasuki. Not just that, I have had absolutely no feelings whatsoever, with Col. Dasuki.

"I think the last time I saw Col. Dasuki must have been in 1987 when he was ADC to General Babangida and I was Secretary to the Federal Government of the Federation.

"So we worked together, that was on 1987. That is 29 years ago. So, ladies and gentlemen, please, put your mind at rest. I have nothing to do with Dasuki. I took no money from Dasuki.

The N100m they are talking about, it was the money sent by the PDP to your party, SDP, following our endorsement of their presidential candidate."

Buhari Is Only Taking His Time, He Won't Spare Jonathan – Fasanmi

A Second Republic legislator, Pa Ayo Fasanmi, has come up to say that the trial of former President, Goodluck Jonathan for graft is a matter of time.

Fasanmi, who spoke with the Punch in an interview, on Tuesday, however, said Nigerians should not be in a hurry to see the trial of Jonathan commence.

He said, "What comes round, goes around. Nigerians should be patient with President Muhammadu Buhari. The trial of the former President is bound to happen. How can you have security chiefs under your watch being indicted for corruption charges and you won't have to be quizzed too?

"President Buhari is only taking his time. It is only a matter of time. It is unfortunate that Nigeria is now being referred to as the Federal Republic of Corruption. The security chiefs couldn't have acted alone.

"President Buhari is on a silent revolution. He needs the support of every right-thinking Nigerian. By the grace of God, he will succeed."

He described corruption as one of the greatest challenges confronting the country

Fasanmi, who was elected into the House of Representatives in 1983 to represent Ondo-North federal constituency on the platform of the defunct Unity Party of Nigeria, says no one knows how the ongoing anti-corruption campaign would end.

He concluded that, "Buhari is sent by God. He contested repeatedly and failed to clinch the Presidency. But he didn't relent. I believe God has sent him to clean the country. At the end of the day, everybody will be happy."

Understanding Best Before and Expiry Dates on your consumable goods

Expiry Date: It is added to a food package to tell consumers the last day a product is safe to consume. You should never consume food after the expiry date.

Best Before Date: This is the date the manufacturer deems the product reaches peak freshness. The date does not indicate spoilage, nor does it necessarily tells you that the food is no longer safe for consumption.

Fuel Scarcity: NNPC to build 109 new mega-stations across Nigeria
-
In a deft move designed to ensure efficient distribution and country-wide penetration of petroleum products, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, has commenced nationwide consultation with stakeholders aimed at drumming support for the planned expansion of its retail outlets across the country.
Under the expansion plan, NNPC is seeking to expand the market share of its retail business to an appreciable level from the current 12 per cent by building a mega station in every Senatorial district in the country in the months ahead.
Speaking during the flag-off of consultation during the week with a visit to the Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, the Group Executive Director, Commercial and Investment, Babatunde Adeniran, who led the NNPC delegation said the purpose of the visit was to solicit for the support of Kaduna State Government to provide lands for building new NNPC petrol stations in the state.
"Our mission is to build three mega stations, one each in the three senatorial districts of the state. We need about five thousand square meters for each of the station. Each station will have six pumps including that of Liquefied Petroleum Gas which is cooking gas," the GED said.
Governor El-Rufai who was visibly elated expressed gratitude to NNPC management for deciding to flag-off the outlets expansion programme in Kaduna Sate, adding: "Any time NNPC comes visiting, it comes with good news".
The governor who gave express approval for lands to be made available to NNPC for the mega stations said: "I want to assure you that we will give you all the support that you need. The State Director of Lands will take the NNPC project team round the state to look at alternative sites. I don't know how many you are building, we can give you as many as ten sites if you want".
He stated that the supply of petroleum products was a key requirement for the prosperity of the country, adding that he was happy that NNPC was ready to invest heavily in the retail business to ensure that Nigerians are not exploited by private sector marketers.
He pledged the support of the state government to the success of the NNPC in general and the Kaduna Refining and Petrochemical Company (KRPC) in particular.
Speaking in similar vein during the consultative visit to Kano State, Governor Abdullahi Ganduje described NNPC as an indispensable business ally for socio-economic growth of Kano State and the country at large.
"Indeed, collaborating with the NNPC is indispensable if we are to achieve socio-economic development of the State. Kano State being the largest in terms of population and also the commercial nerve centre of the North, there is no better organization to have an alliance with than the NNPC," Gov. Ganduje said.
He said he has already directed the Commissioner of Lands to work with the NNPC project team in selecting sites that meet the commercial requirement of the new filling stations in all the senatorial districts of the state.
"We know the philosophy behind establishing such retail stations. Considering that you are the custodians of crude oil and petroleum products in the country, one may wonder why you are into retail business. But those of us in governance understand the situation because if you leave everything to the marketers, then the problem of control especially of the price and availability will become difficult", Gov. Ganduje enthused, adding that NNPC mega stations have integrity and do not require any enforcement for compliance on approved prices of petroleum products.
In a related development, the Governor of Jigawa State, Badaru Abubakar, has pledged support for the NNPC retail outlet expansion project.
Gov. Abubakar who spoke when he received the NNPC delegation for a consultative meeting on the retail expansion project said he has directed the Ministry of Lands to provide alternative sites that meet the stipulated requirements for NNPC to choose from.
Dr. Adeniran expressed gratitude to the governors for their unwavering support for the aspirations and success of the Corporation.

It is a challenge and an affront to our common humanity that 125 million people across the world require humanitarian assistance. The newly published UN High-Level Panel Report on humanitarian funding is valuable for its clarity, its robust analysis and its clear moral message.

The world's prosperous nations need to show real ethical leadership to alleviate the suffering of the most vulnerable. The report contains important recommendations for governments, NGOs, aid agencies and the private sector, who must set aside rivalries and suspicions to forge an effective new consensus.

I hope they will heed these messages and work together for the common good. http://bit.ly/1ntzS0E

Groups Raises Alarm Over GEJ's Speculated Arrest
-
The speculation for the arrest of former President Goodluck Jonathan over allegations surrounding the purported $2.1 million arms deal, by the federal government has stirred some dust.
The Committee for the Defence of Democracy (CDD) has raised alarm over the alleged plot, Vanguard reports.
The group in a statement by Comrade Akindele Lawson, its publicity secretary, described the move by the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari as the height of the series of blame that the new administration has continued to put on the last.
CDD has asked President Buhari to stop blaming his predecessor, for Nigeria's problems, while urging the government to focus on delivering dividends of democracy to Nigerians, as promised during the campaigns.
The group stated that if the president continues in this line concerning the affairs of the country with so much focus on the past, then there will be danger ahead as there may be no indication of any change.
CDD stressed that it was wrong for anybody to claim that ammunition and military hardware were not bought for the Nigerian Armed Forces during the administration of former President Jonathan, as it asserted that the current probe is nothing, other than the probe of the campaign funding of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, which is just being sensationalizedby the APC government.
The statement further said: "It is on record that despite the difficulties that the Jonathan administration faced in procuring arms from some western nations over alleged human rights issues, he still managed to source sizable quantities of platforms, weapons, bullets and other ammunition for the Nigerian Army, Navy and Air Force, which were used to tackle insurgency to a near end before the end of his administration."
"There is no doubt that the purchase of massive arms and ammunition in the last one year of the Jonathan government made it possible for the military to root out Boko Haram terrorists from all parts of Yobe and Adamawa States, leaving only about three local government areas in Borno State, partially under the control of the insurgents, as at May 2015."
The group, challenged Buhari's administration to deny the fact that the Nigerian military was still using the arms and ammunition purchased by Jonathan to fight, insisting that present administration has not bought any new arms till date.
Over the past few months, operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Department of State Services (DSS), have arrested some public figures who served during Goodluck Jonathan's administration, over the alleged $2 billion arms procurement deal.

N13 Billion Fraud: Tompolo Writes Buhari Denies Any Wrongdoing
The most wanted ex-militant Leader in the Niger Delta region, Government Ekpemupolo (AKA Tompolo) yesterday sent a protest letter to President Muhammadu Buhari over an alleged plot by members of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) from Bayelsa and Delta States to frame him as the sponsor of bomb attacks against oil facilities in the region.
According to Tompolo, though he has repeatedly denied involvement in the alleged case of a N13 billion land deal fraud and the bombing of oil facilities leveled against him, the priming investigation by him showed that the desperate plot to hang him is being hatched by the Governorship candidate of the APC in Bayelsa State, Timipre Sylva, a lawyer attached to the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC), and one of his kinsmen within Delta State.
Tompolo, in the protest letter made available to newsmen yesterday in Yenagoa the State capital, alleged that the anger of Mr. Sylva and others involved in the plot are political and personal anger against his perceived influence in the region.
Portions of the letter can be found below:
"I want you [President Buhari] to beware that members of your Party in Bayelsa and Delta States.
"I wish to inform you that, it has come to my knowledge that ,the leader of your party and governorship candidate of the APC in Bayelsa [Mr. Sylva] and a few young men from Warri South West LGA of Delta State, all of whom joined the party from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after the 2015 presidential election, are hell bent on linking me to the renewed vandalization of oil facilities in the Niger Delta region.
"They are doing this in connivance with the Economic and Financial Crime Commission, (EFCC) lawyer, who is also a member of your Party. The lawyer is at the forefront of prosecuting me because I refused to buy any property from him.
The crux of this letter is to let you know that they are dubious, mischievous, desperate, pretentious, manipulative, and corrupt. Therefore, they do not share the same vision and mission with you, and they do not believe in good governance."
"I will briefly tell you some of their antecedents in this letter. The leader of your Party in Bayelsa State approached me shortly after my meeting with you in Abuja, that I should accompany him to meet you and plead for him to be appointed as Special Adviser, SA and Chairman of the Presidential Amnesty programme committee, which I refused to do because of his antecedents, as not a reliable and trustworthy person."
"It was thereafter he forced his way into the governorship election of the State, which almost tore the State apart with violence, beginning with the Party primary in which he demonstrated a high level of desperation as was recounted by the chairman of the committee and governor of Edo State, Adams Oshiomhole.
"As for the members of the party from my local government area,Warri South West, they have been involved in illegal bunkering and oil theft activities over the years, which I have been fighting against because of love for country.
"They know me as a no-nonsense person. There is a particular individual from the same Gbaramatu kingdom with me that has sworn to kill me because I refused to manipulate the ascension to our traditional stool in his favor. However, he was not qualified for the position. Nonetheless he has been exploring ways to 'deal with me.'
"As for the EFCC lawyer, he approached me some years back and told me that I should come to Abuja and Lagos to buy some choice property worth billions of naira from him. I told him that I do not have such money to buy property. Besides, I was not interested in holding property in Abuja and Lagos I only wished to own property in my village.
"Since then he has been looking for any opportunity to drag me into matters I do not know anything about. And this is one of the reasons why I have not appeared in the court because he is not qualified to prosecute me.
"The truth of the matter is that I do not know anything about the N34 billion EFCC is talking about. First, it was 13 billion naira issue, now it is 34 billion naira.
"I am not a signatory to any of the companies mentioned in the said 34 billion naira case, so I do not know where this one is coming from. I know that God in his infinite mercy will see me through in this critical moment.

SURVIVAL TIPS FOR DIFFICULT TIMES! ... A Repost:

By now, it should be clear to all of us that this year will be a difficult one and to survive it, you just have to be prepared to let go of some things and spend only when absolutely necessary.

If you have saved money, try not to touch it unless absolutely necessary.

Avoid capital projects in the next few months until you are certain of replenishing your bank accounts.

Avoid social travels that bring no added income.

If attending a burial, wedding, naming ceremony, or marriage etc, will eat into your savings, avoid them. You may be called names; accept the name calling because these same people will call you worse names if you have to borrow from them to feed your family.

Reduce your responsibilities. Your first duty is to your family. If you don't provide for them, others will rarely do so.

Talk to your friends who are working not to bother asking you for favours. Many of them wear Designer outfits and will ask you for extra money to maintain their lavish lifestyles.

Avoid those who ask you in advance what you are going to get for them on their birthdays or Valentine day. They tell you things are hard but refuse to agree that things are hard for you too.

If your friends on social media send you a private message complaining about hardship and asking you for help, tell them if you start helping everyone on social media who has asked you for help, you will end up begging for help too.

Cut your pants according to your size. If you think that staying in Lekki will take more than half of your savings, move to Otta.

The downfall of a man is not the end of his life.

Help your friends to start cutting costs by cutting costs yourself.
Don't spend thousands to celebrate your birthday because you will be putting pressure on them to celebrate theirs.
If they call and ask how your birthday is going to be, tell them "Ground no level". Tell them you hope things will improve next year.
Do not be pushed into unnecessary spending for any reason.

Even if you have the money to spend, spend on things that can uplift your life and the life of others.
People have spent millions on their wedding, only to live unhappily thereafter.
People have spent millions on their birthdays, only to be forgotten a few months after.
Most importantly, understand that happiness does not come from vanity.
They hail you as Abuja Big Boy, Lagos Big Girl, London Big Girl, Yankee Big Boy or Europa! It's just a state of mind.
There are hundreds of people out there, unknown in your circles, who are living a quiet life of bliss.
Moreover, there is no Big Boy or Girl in the grave.

Economic indices have indicated trying times ahead.

CONCENTRATE YOUR ENERGY ON THINGS THAT CAN IMPROVE YOUR LIFE AND THE LIFE OF PERSONS CLOSE TO YOU.

Seriously reflect on the message and I hope it makes a difference in our attitude to unnecessary spending in this difficult times of restructuring.

I SUPPORT THE ANTI CORRUPTION WAR - SEN. Buruji Kashamu

We should be patient with the government and perform our civic responsibilities as patriotic citizens. For instance, I endorse the ongoing anti-corruption campaign. It is one effort that must be supported by all and sundry irrespective of ethnic, religious or political affiliations. My support for the ongoing anti-corruption campaign is neither meant to rubbish anyone, curry favour from any quarters nor join the ruling party. My support for the anti-graft campaign is borne out of my genuine desire to stand up for what is right, just and equitable in order for the masses to weigh whatever I say and be able to take informed decisions rather than being brainwashed. For, as Martin Luther King, Jr. said, "The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy."
Naturally, the current anti-corruption campaign would affect a lot of those who played active roles in the immediate past administration, especially at the federal level. Therefore, it is only normal for the government of the day to first clear the Augean stable before settling down for the onerous task of governance. In the course of doing that, if anybody's name is found in the books, the anti-graft agencies have a duty to do their job. But, such a job must be done, according to the Rule of Law. It is only the court that can say whether someone is guilty or not. Indeed, it is an aberration for a creation of the law to violate the law.
Yet, if the truth must be told, within the short time that this anti-corruption campaign began, there are positive results to show that the government is on track. The President rode to office on account of his integrity and goodwill. No matter what anybody says, his integrity is intact. He is a focused President whose body language is making treasury looters shiver and return their loot to the government's coffers. Put simply, his anti-corruption record is infallible. In view of the dwindling oil revenue, we need all the money we can get to fix our infrastructure and develop our economy.

How much PDP stole under their regime--FG

Lai Mohammed, the minister of information, has disclosed how much was stolen by looters from Nigeria's coffers during the 7 past years of the ruling of the Peoples Democratic Party.

The minister stated that some 1.34 trillion naira ($6.72 billion, 6.15 billion euros) was supposedly stolen between 2006 and 2013 by just 55 people.

Mohammed said: "The situation is dire and the time to act is now."

He continued that tackling corruption was key to the President Muhammadu Buhari government. but added that it involved everyone.

The period covered commences toward the end of the second tenure in office for country's first civilian president after military rule, Olusegun Obasanjo. He was succeeded in 2007 by Umaru Musa Yar'Adua

Goodluck Jonathan, immediate past president, took over in 2010 when Yar'Adua died in office.

Mohammed gave the breakdown as follows:

– 15 former state governors stole 146.84 billion naira;

– 11 businessmen took 653 billion naira;

– Eight people in the banking industry stole 524 billion naira;

– 12 former state and federal public servants made off with more than 14 billion naira;

– Five former lawmakers pilfered 8.35 billion naira;

– four former ministers took seven billion naira.

The minister continued: "Using World Bank Rates and Costs, one third of the stolen funds could have provided 635.18 kilometres of road; built 36 ultra modern hospitals, that is one ultra modern hospital per state; built 183 schools; educated 3,974 children from primary to tertiary level at 25.24 million per child; and built 20,062 units of 2-bedroom house.

"This is the money that a few people, just 55 in number, allegedly stole within a period of just eight years. And instead of a national outrage, all we hear are these nonsensical statements that the Government is fighting only the opposition, or that the government is engaging in vendetta."

Before he got into power in May, Buhari, a retired Army General, pledged to probe all corruption cases, past and present, and to bring to book all the culprits.

In fact, he campaigned and won Nigeria's presidential elections in March, on among other things, the pledge of fighting corruption in his country.

Must we allow these thiefs to go scot free???

Nigeria's Minister for Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey
Onyema, announced on Monday that Nigeria is
in talks with several countries to return money
stolen under the late Nigerian dictator, General
Sanni Abacha's regime. From 1993 to 1998,
Abacha allegedly stashed away $5 billion in
different western nations including Switzerland,
United Kingdom and the United States.
Over the past decade, these nations have
returned approximately $1 billion dollars in
total to the country from accounts that belonged
to Abacha. However, Switzerland has only
recently shown its preparedness to return $300
million this year after $380 million was
returned last year .
In light of unusual interest rates in
Switzerland's banking sector at the moment,
Ventures Africa spoke with Kemi Akinde, the
Chief Economic Officer of Meristem Securities
Limited, to find out if there is a relationship
between these interest rates and Switzerland's
preparedness to return Nigeria's money.
Ventures Africa (VA): Is the Swiss Central
Bank obligated to release Abacha's loot
with interest to Nigeria?
Kemi Akinde (KA): There is no obligation by
the Switzerland government to release the loot
with interest. Obligation will arise out of a
mutually agreed stance which will be legally
binding but, this is not the case. The accounts
where these funds have been frozen hitherto, so
'technically' they did not enjoy the liquidity to
earn yields. The repatriation of the funds came
at the conclusion of the comprehensive
agreement between the Federal Government of
Nigeria and the Abacha family in July 2014 and
there was no negotiation with any Swiss bank
on a rate on the funds. So it makes sense to
make recourse to the Swiss National Bank rate
which was 0 percent then and it dropped to
-0.75 percent in 2015. So, technically, we should
be getting a discount to face value. In summary,
there is absolutely no obligation to pay interest
on the funds.
VA: Nigeria received some of Abacha's loot
from Switzerland last year and will be
receiving some more this year. Could the
Swiss government's readiness to return stolen
money be related to its new and
sudden interest rates, considering that the
original plan to return money was every 10
years?
KA: Ironically, their current yield environment
is even an incentive for them to hold on to the
funds since there is a charge on it. It seems they
are being generous to Nigeria by returning the
money.
VA: Would that amount of money (about $300
million) have any effect on Nigeria's
economy, especially its current foreign
exchange rates?
KA: $300million will have an effect but when
placed in the context of an over $500billion
economy and $30billion budget, we shouldn't
be too optimistic. The loot is inconsequential to
the exchange rate. By the way, in the defense of
the currency, the CBN has released $332million
so far in Forex reserve in 2016, which are less
than ten business days. Putting this in
perspective, the $300million recovered loot is
no solution. The Forex issues currently plaguing
the country are rooted in deep structural
misalignments to which monetary policy is
constrained in resolving, considering its policy
toolkit. It can only kick the can down the road
until the structural issues are addressed on the
fiscal side.

THE AKPABIO-UDOEDEGHE CONSPIRACY AGAINST UMANA OKON UMANA.

UMANA UMANA ASKS COURT TO DISMISS CASE SEEKING TO CHALLENGE AKWA IBOM STATE APC GUBER PRIMARIES; COURT TO RULE FEBRUARY 24, 2016.

[By Inibehe Effiong Esq]

The attempt by the defeated governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom State, Senator James John Akpan Udoedehe to consolidate three separate applications seeking to relist his case which was struck out by Justice E. S. Chukwu met a brick wall today at the Federal High Court, Abuja. Udoedehe is seeking to challenge the conduct of the December 4, 2014 primaries which produced Umana Okon Umana as the APC governorship candidate in Akwa Ibom State.

The Lawyers representing the Akwa Ibom State APC governorship candidate Umana Okon Umana and the APC; Solomon Umoh (SAN) and Chief Victor Iyanam, former Attorney General in Akwa Ibom State stoutly resisted the attempts.

Udoedehe had brought an application asking the court to relist his case against the conduct of the 2014 APC governorship primary election which was earlier struck out for want of diligent prosecution.

Upon being served with the response filed by Umana Umana and the APC, lawyers to Mr Udoedehe realised that the application to relist was filed several days outside the six days period allowed by law. They then brought another application seeking for extension of time to enable them file the application for relisting. Again, Udoedehe's lawyers failed to obtain the leave (permission) of the court before seeking for externsion of time as stipulated by law. Surprisingly, when it was time for Udoedehe's lawyers to file their response to the counter affidavit by Umana Umana and the APC in opposition to the application for relisting, lawyers to Udoedehe again failed to do so within the time allowed by law. A third application seeking to regularise (correct) the errors was equally filed.

When the matter came up in court on Monday, lawyer to Udoedehe, Mahmud Magaji (SAN), sought to consolidate all three separate applications aimed at correcting the many defects in the case and argue them together. This was strongly resisted by Solomon Umoh (SAN) who led other lawyers for Umana Umana and the APC. In its ruling, the court rejected the plea to consolidate the three applications. Mr Magaji eventually argued the applications separately.

In his argument for the relisting of the suit, lawyer to Udoedehe stated that the case was struck out in his absence on the 06/07/15 when the case came up because of misinformation by the court's Registry and that the court had brought the date slated for hearing of the case forward by two days which led to his absence from court on the day the case was struck out for want of diligent prosecution. He urged the court to relist and revive the case.

However, the presiding judge, Justice Chukwu drew the attention of Udoedehe's Lawyers to the court's record which did not support their submission.

In his submission, Solomon Umoh (SAN) contended that the facts upon which Udoedehe's application for relisting is based were false. He insisted that Udoedehe lied by deposing to facts which were not true just to tarnish the image of the court. He further argued that the applications were baseless and undeserving of attention and urged the court to dismiss same in their entirety.

Meanwhile, an apparently embarrassed Sen Udoedehe who arrived the court late refused to speak with press men who accompanied him to the court after the hearing.

The APC in Akwa Ibom State has consistently accused Udoedehe of working for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Udoedehe is expected to officially decamp to the PDP before the fresh governorship election in Akwa Ibom State.

The court has adjourned to February 24, 2016 for a formal ruling on the application to relist.

★★★FOOTNOTE★★★

The sudden involvement of Mahmud Magaji, SAN, in the ill advised and bellicose suit of Senator Udoedeghe against Umana Umana is as instructive as it is very revealing.

In the first instance, it is a well known fact that Mahmud Magaji, SAN, is Godswill Akpabio's PERSONAL LAWYER. It bears recalling that Mahmud went with Akpabio to the EFCC office when he was invited last year. Indeed, Mahmud endorsed Godswill Akpabio's petition against Bar. Leo Ekpenyong to the IGP.

It is also a known fact that Mahmud Magaji wrote to request the permission of the IGP, on behalf of Larmode, to commence a private investigation/persecution against Bar. Leo Ekpenyong if the NPF is too loaded. The Police legal department almost granted that permission but for the timely sacking of Larmode.

Against this background, it cannot be difficult to see that Senator Udoedeghe, who had on several occasions publicly accused Godswill Akpabio of masterminding the cold blooded slaughtering of his supporters in Ikot Ekpene when he went there for a governorship campaign rally in 2011, has been blinded by his deep and irrational hatred of Umana Umana to join forces with Akpabio in the futile effort to scuttle the Umana-APC victory in the coming fresh gubernatorial election.

We cannot do anything for now than to patiently observe how events unfold and what the verdict of history will be.

House of Reps on Edge As Sex Scandal Rocks Internally Displaced Persons Camps...See Details
-
A probe is set to be launched by the House Committee for Internally Displaced Persons following reports on sex scandals in IDP Camps in the country.
The Chairman of the House Committee for Internal Displaced Persons (IDPs), Alhaji Sani Zoro (Jigaw APC) on Sunday, January 17, revealed that his committee had wrapped up plans to probe reported cases of sex scandals in the IDP camps across the country.
It was reported that officials at the camps give food to young girls and women in exchange for sex.
Zoro a member, representing Maigatari/Gumel/Gagarawa federal constituency made the shocking revelation yesterday while fielding questions from newsmen in Dutse.
He said that no particular organization was fingered for the crime but said at the committee level they would not rest on their oars until the culprits were brought to book. "There are allegation which we are trying to prove.
There are officials in the camp that take advantage of some young girls and women in order to give them preferential treatment when food and water are supplied.
He said: "I am not trying to make any particular reference to any organization. But this is highly irresponsible and unacceptable to us."
According to him, Nigeria has the highest number of displaced persons in the world over, saying at present the country had about 5 million IDPs scattered in 21 camps across the country.
He explained that in North East alone as at December last year there were 2.3 million IDPs while 2012 flood displaced 2.1million people adding this was with the exception of IDPs from Bakassi.

SACK HIM PRESIDENT..#SHIKENAN
VIDEO: NIGERIA'S INTERIOR MINISTER, DAMBAZAU, CONVERTS SSS OFFICER TO "SHOE SHINER"
Nigeria's Minister of Interior, Abdulrahman Dambazau, has been caught on tape using an officer of Nigeria's secret police, the State Security Service, to clean his shoes in public.
A video sent to PREMIUM TIMES by one of its readers showed the minister, dressed in white gown, relaxing on a couch with his legs stretched out.
The SSS officer appeared from the sides, with a handkerchief in his right hand and a holstered service pistol protruding from his jacket.
He was shown stooping before the minister, using his left hand to lift Mr. Dambazau's right leg, slightly above the floor to clean his loafers.
The minister bent his head to notice him, before looking away to focus on the event unfolding in a distance.
The minister was at the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps Academy in an Abuja suburb for an event in December.
He was seated between what seemed to be top officers of the NSCDC who merely took short glances at the SSS officer stooping before them.
Soon, the right leg shoe was glistering again and he steadily dropped it back to a dusty floor.
The minister adjusted himself in his couch and gently raised the left foot, appearing detached, while the SSS officer took it in his palms again and wiped off the dust.
Top Nigerian officials are known for misusing or abusing security details posted to them.
Apparently irritated by the way security officials are treated by the VIPs to which they are attached, the Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase, in May last year, warned police officers against running errands or doing domestic chores for their principals.
"Those of you who are posted to VIPs, on no account should you carry their bags and on no account should you act as domestic servants to them," Mr. Arase told police inspectors and other rank and file on May 21, 2015, shortly after he was appointed Inspector General
"You are police officers of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and they must respect you as such. Your uniform must be respected, anybody who wants to hire a domestic help should not use our policemen who are sent to protect them as domestic help.
"I have directed the commissioner of police in charge of the airports that if they find any of you carrying boxes (of VIPs) and rifles, and dragging them all over the place, they should arrest you and you will be punished.''
It is not clear whether the SSS gave a similar instruction to its personnel.

LIEUTENANT GENERAL TUKUR YUSUF BURUTAI: WAR VETERAN AND GENTLEMAN OFFICER

The appointment of Lieutenant General Tukur Yusuf Burutai as Nigeria's Chief of Army Staff came at an opportune time. The war in the North-East was raging like an unquenchable fire while the morale of our gallant men and women of the Nigerian Army was at its lowest ebb. Posterity will give a holistic, comprehensive assessment of the tenure of the Chief of Army Staff, but it is worth the while to state that, in the interim, General Buratai is on the right track to reposition our military institution.

With the launch of OPERATION LAFIYA DOLE by General Burutai, the war against Boko Haram insurgents took a marked turn. Pundits and political commentators are at liberty to cogitate on the poser whether we are winning the war against Boko Haram or not, but to keen observers, it is clear that the Nigerian Army under General Burutai has achieved appreciable, measurable success in its bid to rout out insurgents from the North-East. Naturally, General Burutai's experience as former Commander of the Multinational Joint Task Force comes in handy, as he heads the nation's army.

The gentlemen officers of the Nigerian Army are usually well-read with fine manners. With 2 degrees, one in History and the other in Philosophy, and sufficient cognate experience, General Burutai has the advantage of having his reputation precede him. As the Commander 2 Brigade Port Harcourt and Sector Commander Joint Task Force Operation Pulo Shield, General Burutai ensured that there was improved security in Rivers and Bayelsa states. A decorated war veteran, and recipient of several military honours (including the Meritorious Service Star and Distinguished Service Star), General Burutai heroically led the fight against oil theft, piracy, kidnapping and armed robbery in the Niger Delta. To his credit, the barracks infrastructure in Port Harcourt was greatly improved.

Till the appointment of General Burutai as Chief of Army staff, the nation had not seen a military officer who led from the front. If General Burutai is not visiting troops on the frontline or paying unscheduled visits to military formations for inspection, he is either engaged in work-out or training drills with the soldiers or sharing a convivial moment with them on festive occasions, where the rigid wall between officer and private is temporarily broken. All these boost the morale of our soldiers in a major way.

The recent gubernatorial elections in Kogi and Bayelsa states have also shown the professional trait of the Nigerian Army. Refusing to take sides with any of the political parties, including the ruling party, the Nigerian Army kept the peace while maintaining its neutrality. Kudos to the Chief of Army Staff who, like his Commander-in-Chief, belongs to everybody and belongs to nobody.

The Media Vanguard for Change (MVC) expresses confidence in General Tukur Burutai and the men and women of the Nigerian Army as they continue to protect Nigeria's territorial integrity while maintaining internal security.

FOREX CRISIS: Naira may crash further this week

January 17, 2016

Banks have recorded near zero foreign currency deposit inflow from high net-worth individuals indicating that their domiciliary account customers are staying cautious on the reversal of foreign currency deposit ban by Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, early lastweek.Naira-DollarThe development has sustained scarcity of foreign exchange in the market as well as the high exchange rate above N300/ USD1CBN had hoped to buoy foreign currency supply from independent sources through the de-freezing of foreign currency deposits, and hence help douse the pressure on exchange rate which had accentuated last week.Sunday Vanguard investigations last weekend, however, showed that only low-end domiciliary account holders responded to the policy with a few dollar deposits, a situation which prompted some of the banks to send out marketing sensitization to their customers to come forward and deposit their dollar with them. Some of the bankers who spoke to Sunday Vanguard expressed surprise that much dollar did not come in during the week contrary to the expectations that customers who had inundated them with inquiry on how to deposit their foreign currencies did not turn up in response to CBN's directive.CBN had, mid last year, barred banks from accepting foreign currency deposits from their customers, a development that cut most of the customers napping, with foreign currency cash in their homes, with the attendant danger.Last week, CBN reversed itself, allowing the deposits but it appeared the domiciliary account depositors have found alternatives. Some of the bankers told Sunday Vanguard that some of the depositors now trade or invest their dollar cash with Bureau de Changes, BDCs, where exchange rates and returns on investments are far higher, not mindingthe risks involved. However, they also explained that some of the bigger volume customers are finding options with foreign bank accounts.Consequently, the expected inflow of dollar into the domiciliary accounts with local banks did not come as much as was anticipated. But some financial sector observers said the high volume dollar account customers were skeptical about the policy reversal which was silent on withdrawals. The CBN foreign currency deposit restriction policies had come with imposition of limits on foreign currencywithdrawals, but the unbanning of deposits last week was silent on withdrawals. This gap, according to the analysts, may have short-circuited the expected positive response from most domiciliary account holders especially the high-end customers.Commenting on the policy reversal, financial sector analysts at Afrinvest Group said "CBN reneged on its earlier policy, announcing its decision to allow commercial banks accept foreign currency deposits but was not clear on whether foreign currency transfers or withdrawals can be made".They are also worried that despite the huge crash in value of the Naira against world's major currencies, CBN maintained its official rate at N197/ USD1 thereby creating wider parallel market margin of about 50 per cent, the highest so far in the history of Nigeria's currency market.Consequently, Afrinvest stated that"this calls for a quick response of the monetary authority given the huge margin between the official and parallel market rates."With foreign reserves at lows of US$28.7 billion and oil prices at US$29.47 per barrel, a compelling argument to devalue the Naira at the next Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting cannot be jettisoned", it stated. Analysts at Cowry Asset Management, a Lagos based investment house, expressed discomfort at the policy reversal whichthey believe fell short of capturing other factors that would have made it achieve desired results. They stated,"we are worried that the policies of CBN on the foreign exchange management seem to be made in silos as all the ramifications didn't seem to have been factored in before the announcements, hence the frequent reversals and consequent loss of confidence by the business and investing public."We will advice the Monetary authorities to articulate an integrated policy on foreign exchange management taking into considerationthe fiscal policy objectives of the federal government."We also think that CBN being the recipient and owner of 90% of the country's foreign exchange earnings must evolve a channel for injecting dollar cash liquidity into the system, to meet legitimate needs". Concluding itsprognosis of the foreign currency market situation, Cowry Assets analysts stated, "this week we expect further depreciation of the Naira at the alternative market segments on aggravated supply scarcity buoyed by the closure of CBN's window to BDCs".

The Federal Government may have ordered security agents at the nation's airports and borders to place embattled Comptroller-General of Nigeria Customs Service, Abdullahi Dikko, under arrest as soon as he is sighted. Common sense is not common. If it was common, a public office holder will not mess with public funds. It is a shameful act. It shows how messy this nation was, if not for PMB this nation would have drowned. Yet some ungrateful persons with degraded personality and integrity are calling PMB a tyrant. APC Accuses Kaduna Chapter Of Insubordination Over Shehu Sani's Suspension

Following the Kaduna State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC's) refusal to heed to the position of the zonal leadership of the party which stood down the alleged suspension of Senator Shehu Sani from the party, acting national publicity secretary of the APC, Comrade Timi Frank, has cautioned on the consequences of he described as "insubordination."

It would be recalled that National Vice Chairman (North-West) of the party, Barrister Inuwa Abdulkadir, had after meeting with party stakeholders in the state last Monday, lifted the suspension of Sani, a move which did not go down well with the state chapter which said the Senator's suspension remained.

Kaduna State Publicity Secretary of the APC, Salisu Tanko Wusono, had faulted Abdulkadir's lifting of the suspension, saying the zonal vice chairman acted without the consent of the national leadership of the party, contrary to Section 21 of the APC constitution.

A statement signed by the Acting National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Comrade Timi Frank, Thursday in Abuja, asked the state chapter of making further utterances bothering on Sani's suspension, adding that the decision of the zonal chairman was the position of the party's national body and subsisted.

He cautioned the state chapter of the party to desist forthwith further acts which tend to embarrass the party as, just as he reminded the chapter of party supremacy and loyalty.

"The position taken by the northwest vice chairman, Inuwa Abdulkadir subsists and has the backing of the national body. It is pertinent that all party stakeholders and members take note of this and submit to the will of the party no matter their interests in the matter.

"Rather than continue to sow seeds of discord, we must endeavor to bolster party unity and cohesion. All hands must be on deck to achieve this and not continue in acts that only expose us to the opposition parties and manipulations of a few", Timi Frank said.
